UNITED MINERAL & CHEMICAL
is the sole U.S. representative for JMB and has been involved in the
marketing and sales of quality pigments for thirty-five years. The
combined production and marketing experience resulting from the
association with JMB, together with the outstanding quality of the
product, enables UMC to provide continuously reliable service to the
U.S. color industry and to consistently meet stringent industry demands
for precise formulations, immediate delivery, and competitive pricing.
In recent years, the plastics industry has become a major consumer of
cadmium pigments. We are committed to this market, as well as to more
traditional users in paints, coatings, ceramics and artists colors. Our
long term commitments are demonstrated by the fact that since 1980, JMB
has not only doubled the size of its facility but is also one of the
very few manufacturers left in the industry.
We intended to continue this growth, so that we can go on providing the
consistently high level of quality and service the industry has come to
expect from UNITED
MINERAL & CHEMICAL.
General properties
1.RANGE
OF COLORS
James M. Brown manufactures a complete range of cadmium
pigments from a greenish yellow through orange and red to deep maroon.
As well as offering a range of standard pigments on its shade card, JMB
offers a matching service against pigments which customers may already
be using.

2.HEAT
RESISTANCE
Because these pigments have a very stable crystal structure, being
produced themselves at very high temperatures, they do not discolor when
subjected to temperatures normally used for processing baking enamels
and thermoplastic/ thermosetpolymers (abt. 450°C)
3. RESISTANCE
TO CHEMICAL ATTACK
JMB Cadmium Pigments are absolutely insoluble in water, organic
solvents, and plasticizers. They therefore do not mitigate
from products in which they are incorporated due to solvent
attack. They are also completely resistant to attack by alkalis,
hydrogen sulfide, dilute mineral acids, and organic acids

.
4. RESISTANCE
TO DEGRADATION BY LIGHT
These pigments have excellent light fastness, exhibiting a 7 on the wool
scale for Yellows and an 8 for Oranges and Reds. The pigments are not
fast to the combined
effects of strong light, atmospheric water vapor and oxygen.
5. OPACITY
The opacity of these pigments is considerably higher than all organic
alternatives and those of comparable brilliance. As a result, these
cadmium pigments offer a solution to coloring problems in which it is
considered undesirable to incorporate large amounts of a white opacifier.
For this reason, they can be used in conjunction with organic pigments.
6.UNIFORMITY
OF DISPERSION
An average particle size distribution curve indicates 80% of particles
are below 5 microns. This uniformity ensures consistent performance in
standard operations. In general, JMB pigments disperse well for all
usual purposes and are offered without any surface treatment , though
such treatments are available if required.
7.SCREENING
All JMB pigments are screened through a 350 mesh screen and are
magnetically sieved before they are passed for distribution.
8.SAFETY
JMB
cadium pigments conform to the most exacting requirements for the
coloring of plastics, in artists' colors and in ceramics. Tests
have demonstrated that plastics pigmented with up to 1% if these
materials should easily meet the requirements of the European Standard
EN 71 part 3 on toy safety.
They
are manufactured using very high purity raw materials and all undergo an
acid-washing treatment which enables them easily to comply with the 0.01
% Cd (soluble in M/10 hydrochloric acid) which was adopted for pigments
for food-contact use in the Council of Europe's resolution AP 89(1). A
"normal" result on a JMB pigment would be < 0.001 % and
results are often obtained which are below the method detection limit.
(With flameless AA, it would be possible to detect levels lower than 0.0005
% Cd, but the method refers only to normal "flame" AA.
The European Union has recently carried out a thorough cradle-to-grave
risk assesment of cadmium pigments and has concluded that they offer no
significant risk to man or to the environment.
